Zone Diet ReviewThe Zone Diet is one of the most popular diets
in the world. It became popularized in the books of Barry Sears. It is not
a calorie counting diet and it's a system that actually resists the term "diet"
altogether. The zone diet is all about findng the proper balance or "zone"
between protein and carbohydrate intake.
Dr. Sears believes that the best ratio of protein to carbohydrate intake is 3 to 4 which is much more protein (and maybe more importantly much less carbs) than the average American eats. Sears believes that eating in this Zone not only will help you to lose weight but be healthier overall. He feels it's particularly effective for improving heart health. The Zone Diet is anti "low faw" because Sears believes that low fat diets cause an increased product of insulin which causes the body to store more fat. Most of the diets of the past 20 years have been "low fat" in nature but more people than ever are obese. Sears sees a correlation between these two facts. Not only does Sears see low fat diets as part of the problem but he feels that fat is needed to help burn fat. It should be noted here that the The American Heart Association does not endorse the Zone diet due to the stated reasons of high protein intake and not enough information on the long term effects of such a diet. Not like the Atkins Diet - Sears and Zone enthusiasts are quick to say that the Zone Diet is not like the Atkins Diet and that it is not a "low carb" diet. The Atkins Diet restricts carbs to extremely low levels and while the Zone Diet does call for a lower carb count than most people eat it still requires more carbohydrate intake than protein intake (by a 4 to 3 ratio.)
