Protein Smoothie & Health Care Reform

I had a bunch of bananas left over from theĀ  Tour de Floyd this weekend and couldn't figure out a way to use them. Of course, I wanted to make banana bread, but lets not kid ourselves here. I'd eat the whole loaf.

Instead I pulled out the food processor added one scoop of chocolate whey protein, two bananas, 8 oz. skim milk and about 6 pecan halves (I like the crunchy bits) and let it whirl. So good! It makes two servings at about 300 calories each. I love it, this is my new breakfast.

I need to exercise. I need to stop talking about needing to exercise too. That would be good, right? My plan is to go to the gym today while I'm out and about. Bringing my gym clothes. I've got my shuffle ready. Going to the gym. If I keep saying it, it will happen. Going to the gym.

Who is working out today? me!

PS: We/I need health care reform. Like millions of Americans I need health insurance. And no, I'm not someone who sucks money out of the government for any reason at all, yet I cannot get approved for health care because of a heart condition I had when I was three and because of my weight. One I have control over, the other I don't.

Consider that in your lifetime you could get terminally ill and your current health care provider will likely find as many loop holes as possible to get out of fully covering you. Also consider the amount of money businesses shell out every year for each insured employee, the rates are staggering. The health care companies do not want public health care because it threatens to weaken their multi-trillion dollar business.

They will try to install fear and manipulate us into us to keep us from wanting this reform, why wouldn't they?

Sen. Ben Nelson was recently quoted in CQ "Nelson's problem, is that the public plan would be too attractive and would hurt the private insurance plans. "At the end of the day, the public plan wins the game," Nelson said. Including a public option in a health plan, he said, was a "deal breaker."

So at the end of the day, the private health care companies are more important and valuable than the life and health of citizens? Nice.

If you believe in health care reform, please go here. All you have to do is sign an online petition.

This actually makes me really sad. I hear about the insurance problems the US has all the time. So many sad stories. I can’t believe a country would treat it’s people this way! I feel blessed to live where I do (Canada) and do not ever take it for granted–even though our system isn’t perfect either–however, I’ve never thought twice about seeing my doctor or getting pregnant–affording health care is never an issue in these cases here.

  • Have you watched Michael Moore’s movie “Sicko”? Yes like most one sided stories its a bastardization of what is really happening in the world of healthcare, but it does high light a lot of amazing points. You should see Europe’s healthcare system. Amazing.

I had originally planned on going to law school after I graduated from Tech and I really really wanted to focus on Healthcare Reform. I saw Colin Powell speak when he was in Blacksburg (1998 or 1999?) about his Plan for America, and it was truly inspirational.

  • I believe in health care reform and I’m going to the gym today too! :) I can’t believe your wedding is coming up so soon. You’re doing great and you’re going to have a beautiful day!

  • Hey Girl,

You’re sooo right about the healthcare issue in the US. That was like my main soap box topic before immigrating to the UK. Although I now seem to complain about the weather more than anything, it’s so nice to not have that burden about healthcare hanging around my neck. I’ve been especially grateful recently as I’ve had a few health issues.

Anyway, Get your booty in that gym! I’m so excited about your wedding and the dress and I won’t even be there! lol Can’t wait for the pics though… you are posting pics, aren’t you? I never bothered w/ the pomp and circumstance and I know the root of that probably goes back to the old self esteem issue, so I love, love, love that you are putting so much energy and creativity into your special day! Well done!

Have a look at the Abs Diet book, its just a good diet book and thats one its recommendations!

  • I love everything that has banana in it. Banana bread, especially. :)

The last part of your post reminded me of Sicko. I didn’t realize it was that bad there. But who am I kidding, our constitution is based on the American constitution, it’s just as bad here.

  • I so agree on the health care!

Its so insane! My niece graduated college, tried to get her own insurance through the SAME company and was turned down for pre-existing condition. My sister in law has been fighting with them for months!

And, in answer to your question, I AM exercising today!! Wahoo!

  • I totally, totally agree about the healthcare issue in the US. I cannot get health insurance coverage at all at my previous weight. My employer does not have coverage, so I have to get private health insurance. But I CAN’T! Its not like I am not willing to pay or even pay more because I am “at risk” for things. But they won’t let me. Not a single company will give me a policy until I drop about 50 pounds and even then some won’t and others will charge an arm and a leg for basic coverage. It is ridiculous. Makes me sick to think about.

  • I am lucky to live in Canada as well and I try not to take our health care for granted. I work as a Registered Nurse so I see health care from both sides.

I think the best health care reform you can take action on with some success is staying on the path you are on. Taking control of your own health, having a proactive, preventative attitude.

I have lost 55 lbs in the last 7 months and one of the impetus’(or is it impeti) was that I couldn’t find size XXL scrubs to put on quickly if we had to go for a stat
c-section. Was I putting someone elses life at risk because I was fat…? Today I couldn’t find any large pants to put on so I decided to try a medium and OMG they fit. I can’t remember the last time a medium fit.
Stay the course, you are doing great

I also agree about the scandalous picture of health care in the US. I wish the President would get the message that he needs to stand strong on this point.

Opponents to health care reform (e.g. the govt providing health insurance that people can choose to buy) say that government health care will create queues and delays and people not being able to choose doctors or get timely and necessary care.

Hello!! that sounds like a description of most peoples’ current health plans through the completely greedy and messed up insurance industry! And that’s if you are lucky enough to get insurance!

Hey, randomly browsing the webs and I fount you here. The Internet is a small place. Congrats to you and Joshie.

It’s been a while since I’ve talked to either of you but I do think of you both a lot and I hope the wedding goes wonderfully as I know the rest of the marriage will. <3

I always find that the hardest workout is the first one. After that is get a little easier. Just a little. Good luck.

  • I agree with you. American health care killed my grandmother. She was so frugal she “didn’t want to waste money” on going to the doctor when she started feeling ill. Turns out, she had colon cancer, which later spread to her brain. If she had gone when she first started having problems, she would be alive right now.
As a Canadian, it infuriated me. Had she lived here, she would still be alive!

Anyway, your breakfast smoothie sounds great! I wish I was allowed to eat bananas. As soon as I am, I’m going try that!

  • Yet

I saw on your different blog posts that you set goals and follow through! That is something to be commended. Keep at it and I’m sure you will supercide!!

  • Yummy sounding smoothie! If only we had plenty of bananas where I live.

That’s sad about the health care system too :(

In the words of Anthony Hopkins in Legends of the Fall…

    “Screw the government.”

  • Lyn

How’s it going? Did you get to the gym last week? :)

  • Sher/ Stuckinafatbody

    Eh!
its been like a week since you posted.
    what up???

  • Smoothie sounds like a great way to use your bananas!

  • Don’t even get me STARTED on the lunacy of the for-profit healthcare system in this country. I’m liable to start growling and gnashing my teeth and that would invitably lead to something unplanned for being chewed and swallowed in the mayhem.

Glad I stopped by. I’ll be back!

  • I’ve come across your blog and am very glad I have. What an amazing sounding recipe, I hadn’t even known such a thing as chocolate whey protein exists!

Please don’t stress yourself about the need to exercise, I do it all the time and it makes me hate myself and really hate exercising. My sincere advice is to avoid the gym at all costs. My best exercise substitute is a leisurely half hour to hour walk to absorb everything around me, but that’s just me.

I, a poor often fainting hypoglycemic, also do not have health insurance and am in dire need. Thank you for passing on the petition information.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. I’m a music teacher in a public school system, and we don’t have enough students at my school for me to be full time, so I do not get benefits. Even though I’m not there all 5 days during the week, I am still working from home planning lessons and grading papers, yet I do not even qualify for partial benefits. My husband works under a union insurance plan which would only cover him and a potential child, of which we have none, because I can’t get insurance! I want to scream at the people who are against government health care. I hope that we get to see this soon so that I can have peace of mind and get some health problems that have been troubling me taken care of instead of gambling with my health.
