Insanity + GoWear Fit : Weekend Activity

You know what? I love unintentionally active days. I realize that I can burn a bunch of calories and actually have fun. Well, for the most part.

Saturday started out innocently enough, we were headed out to our neighboring shopping center so that I could get a new phone and have dinner out. But, I naively drove down our very muddy and snowy driveway the night before preparing for a warmer weekend. Bad idea. We got stuck and between me, josh and his sister we finally dug it out after two and a half hours! Shoveling and pushing a car is hard work, my GoWear Fit says so:

See that 12-2:30 chunk of activity on the GoWear Fit chart? That's me shoveling snow. Burning calories.

That 4pm-6pm is shopping! Who says shopping is a bad idea?

And in the evening we were invited to a dance club thing in Blacksburg, which since moving to Floyd is something we rarely do because, well, we live in Floyd. That started at around 8pm which you can see above and went on well into the morning:

That is from 12-4am. I forget how much I love to go dancing and realize that this is a fun way to get exercise. I'm not particularly good at it, not that that has ever stopped me. Do you guys like to dance? Do you go out dancing, or crank up the music in your home? Seriously fun exercise.

And now, I'm about to tell you something that will totally shock you (insert sarcasm): I saw an infomercial about two weeks ago and pretty much had to try to program. INSANITY. Have you seen the commercial? I mentioned it to Josh with my usual "you have to see the commercial! it will convince you too!" and so we bought it. I have to try new things, it's in my blood. Anyway, the DVD set arrived a few days ago and we started the program today (as recommended on the poster) with the fitness test. It. was. hard. There were a lot of things I simply could not do very well like jumping jack push-ups (how messed up is that?), but I did the best I could and started sweating withing 2 minutes.

Me and Josh were screaming by the end of each round, it put Jillian's 30 day shred to shame and this was just the fitness test that involved about 10-15 minutes of exercise:

We are going to follow the program for the full 60 days and I'm really looking forward to the challenge. I think I've mentioned that we are in the midst of buying our first home and we definitely need the stress relief.

What's your favorite unintentional/intentional exercise?

  • I love that you convinced him with the infomercial line! I like kayaking or scuba diving for unintentional exercise. Something about spending time in nature that reinvigorates my whole world.

Good luck with the house. We are in the middle of that process ourselves. Definitely stressful at times!

That’s a lot of calories burned, girl! I love dancing too — it’s a blast.

I really enjoy playing volleyball (before I got pregnant) and walking my dog. I don’t realize it is exercise, but they both definitely get my heart going. :)

  • Dancing is the best exercise! It’s so much fun!

  • What do you use to calculate your calories?? That is a neat little chart you got there.

Unintentional exercise is awesome! With our new rental house we now have a small yard, although it is desert landscaping, it still had a lot of weeds to pull and trash to pick it up (it gets windy in Vegas), and I knew that last Saturday was going to be some good exercise doing those chores in the morning. Something else that helps is being a nanny and walking to him school or just going on long walks in the mornings :) I realize not everyone has that excuse to walk but is the perfect unintentional exercise when needing to get somewhere.

And I’ve seen the commercials for Intensity and it looks insane! I have the P90X program and did it last fall and lost about 10 pounds with 50% effort. I just started it again this morning and am trying to give 100% but it is hard and makes no apologies about it!

  • I go dancing every weekend, sometimes twice! I am not particularly good at it, but I have one hell of a good time. I also go to Zumba. Last time I was there, according to my GWF, I burned 1,000 calories in an hour. How could you not love that?

  • I also ordered the insanity program and i cannot wait to get it!!! I have heard from everyone that it is really hard!! Good for you for making the commitment!!

  • My favorite unintentional exercise is suddenly getting the urge to get up and dance like a crazy person to my favorite tunes in the privacy of my living room! Can’t beat it!

I’ve also thought about joining a kickball league. I know it sounds lame but it’s really the only sport that has any kind of appeal for me.

  • My favourite intentional exercise is ZUMBA classes, because like you I love to dance too! I try and go twice a week.

  • Now I’m curious about this Insanity thing. I’ve been using my EA Active for the Wii. It’s good, but I’m starting to get a little bored with the activities. I love dancing, but found myself doing less & less of that overtime. I think it’s because I hated the “dressing up” aspect of it. But I may have to drag my husband out for a night in the town!

  • I too am a big fan of dancing, even though I kinda suck at it. Can I can’t believe you bought INSANITY. That infomercial scares the hell out of me!

  • My fav unintenional exercise is dancing. I will put on the music station and me and my boys will dim the lights and dance our hearts out. I love it.

I so wanna try insanity but I am scared!

  • Unintentional exercise! I love it! It’s called life! Back in the cave man days, this happened all the time…no treadmills then. Sounds like you had a lot of fun! Good for you!

  • I too have a thing for fitness infomercials! I need to check out Insanity!

  • My favorite unintentional exercise is definitely shopping and housework! I don’t love housework but I love how many calories I burn doing it.

Since I just bought a new treadmill that better be my new favorite intentional exercise or my husband will kill me! LOL!

  • Who ever thought shopping could burn calories, unfortunately its the chat at the coffee shop on the way home that undo’s all the good work.
