Challenge Day 5: Completely Out Of Shape

jmchallengebanner Challenge Day 5: Completely Out Of Shape

We didn't go to the gym this evening, but knew we needed to exercise. I was starting to slide deeply into "I do not want to exercise" mode when Josh suggested a walk outside. That peaked my interest as I really didn't want to move the coffee table for a DVD or in the mood to do the wii fit and frankly there wasn't much that appealed to me. That is not a surprise though.

We put on our shoes and headed up our rocky driveway and I started huffing and puffing. Why am I breathing so hard? My body started to heat up and I felt the familiar pressure of my body exerting itself and willing against my weight to keep moving. I kept wondering, why is this so hard? I make it through an hour on the elliptical without much problem.

We kept going, slight inclines and I break a sweat. I'm pushing myself up and down the hills as we walk. It feels nice, the wind is blowing the air is cool and warm. I feel like I weigh 5,000lbs. and then it accures to me that when I exercise at the gym a machine is holding my body up and I am moving. It burns calories, it get my heart rate up and it is exercise, however, walking and dare I say jogging is really hard for me. I felt how out of shape I really am on the road with just my body to move my body.

I power walked pumping my arms vigorously in the air, gasping for air and dripping for sweat. I. am. out. of. shape. Obviously.

I'm home now, the sweat is drying and my legs are tingling. I'm ready to keep going. Tomorrow I'll be back on the road.

  • YOU GO GIRL! It takes a lot to push through, especially when it’s soooooo much easier to stay home and veg out on the couch. I had the same realization today when was doing intervals on the treadmill. I am more out of shape than I realized! Good for you for working so hard, you are that much closer to your goal!

  • I had been kicking it at the gym, and then we went on a walk one evening last week. I was more sore from that than the gym – my hips and knees hurt and my poor little knees made ugly noises for a few days! It’s so interesting how different movement really feels different the next day!

Congrats on getting out, girl! Can’t wait to read how awesome tomorrow will be!

  • A walk always feel different from going to the gym. I always feel more refreshed after a walk.

  • The road is much harsher then the TM or Elliptical. You did great, keep it up and you will be doing it without gasping for breath in know time.

  • springs hello

Yesssss!! You GO GIRL! For me, fresh air is the best when walking outside! Also, I listen to my iPod on really low and talk with my husband to fight boredom. I’m thinking about listening to some podcasts when walking. Fantastic on the exercise. You’re gonna lose the weight if you keep exercising like this. Don’t worry about the calories so much. You burn like 1,400 more or less just doing absolutely nothing, so exercise will work. Just don’t push yourself too hard. listen to your body, if you get tired, take a break. Drink some water. There’s nothing wrong with taking breaks. I’m psyched (excited) for you! Go Girl! You’re beautiful!

  • So true about excercising out of the gym! I can walk on the treadmill for, well what feels like forever, I can do 5 miles on the elliptical no problem, but walking out on a trail, its a completely different sort of burn, and I feel way more out of shape!

  • GOOD FOR YOU!!

This is a hard lesson to learn…when we get used to the elliptical I think we forget how different it is than the treadmill/jogging/running…

  • Good job on pushing yourself even when you didn’t want to do it.

  • Wow! Sounds like a fantastic workout! Plus… you get to enjoy nature and get some fresh air. That combo can’t be beat! Keep up the good work! :)

  • Good job getting out when you didn’t want to. Walking outside is so much better than walking on a treadmill. The fresh air. Being out in nature. It’s a form of meditation I think.

  • Love your website. Good for you for getting outdoors. It’s so hard to push forward when you don’t feel like moving.

  • By the way, my goal is to be a runner. If you saw me you would laugh……off to find a good bra.

    Any recommendations?
