Chia Seeds

hoorah! It's Friday night, we made it. I just realized that I'm going to be 27 in less than a month, hello late 20's!

I have few do's and don't's for 27, it's going to be a good one. Everything I've been preparing for and acting on lately is coming to fruition this year... health, weight loss, self-employment, home ownership that is my 27th year plan. Do you ever have the gut wrenching feeling- the one that asks  "what are you waiting for?" Everyday that I don't chase my goals, it gets even louder.

**********

You guys love oatmeal too! And for those of you on the fence about it, give loaded oatmeal a try. It's so good! 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup oatmeal (splash of vanilla if you like) and like cook until it bubbles, turn the heat down and let cook for 3 minutes until your desires consistency. I start watching it when it bubbles because i know there is a short amount of time between two thick and two thin.

Have you guys tried chia seeds yet? The new super food buzz going on around the internet? I was sent a packet of Ruth's Chocolate chia goodness to give a try. I said yes, because I rarely turn down free food and because they said chocolate. Oh and that stats were pretty good:

Chocolate Chia Goodness has five times the calcium of milk, more Omega 3 than salmon or flaxseed, along with protein and a powerful wallop of fiber. It’s also gluten-free, lactose-free, and low glycemic – so just about anyone can partake of its benefits. You can mix Chia Goodness with juice, applesauce, yogurt, or cottage cheese. Use it as a toping on yogurt or fruit. You can even add it to pancake or muffin batter for an extra nutritional punch.

That's great and all, but how does it taste?

I liked it a lot in yogurt and dry straight out of the bag, but when I made it as directed I found it to be too salty. I gave some to my co-worker to try and she really liked it mixed in with other foods, but not alone it was too salty for her too. It has sea salt in it, which frankly I didn't want to taste over chocolate. I really liked the health benefits and the protein boost in my greek yogurt. I also liked the occasional cocoa nib.

I've looked for the chocolate flavor online, but only came up with a few other flavors on amazon that have their own reviews:

Have you tried chia seeds? Thoughts?

Okay, it's the weekend! See you tomorrow!

I will definitely have to try loaded oatmeal - i know oatmeal is so good for you and “sticks to your ribs” - thanks for the encouragement - i will give it a try

  2. Never heard of them can you get them with the sea salt?

My favorite is to add linseeds to cereals and oatmeal for added fiber and filling. Its best to let them soak overnight first to soften them up.

I’v not heard of this Chia Seed, I will have to try it.

Also–try baking flaxseeds into bread, it tastes amazing.

I have not tried them… but keep thinking of the Chia pets of years ago. Of course you are too young to remember those! And I realized today that I am two whole decades older than you!!!

We tried goji berries after seeing them on Dr. Oz. Ugh.

I firmly believe that you’re not in your late 20s till you’re 27 and a half… anything less is still mid 20s!

  6. I’ve never tried Chia seeds, but I like adding crunch to yogurt, so I’ll give it a try. Thanks for the tip!

Does your lent include telling/asking the readers about new food products? am i close?

Anyhoo, I love chia seeds. Before the internet was going wild with bloggers eating chia seeds, I actually received some as a gift, in the form of a chia pet. oh yes. Anyway on the packet it had some information about eating them so I looked it up and it was madness. years later I see all these people eating the chia and curiosity got the best of me. this is how i do it. But i’ll warn you. If you like tapioca, you might never want to stop eating this stuff. Okay so i put plain little chia seeds (never heard of the chocolate chia goodness but it sounds like what I make but I don’t use salt)–maybe 1/4 cup in at least twice as much milk. honestly I’ve never measured but those babies can sure expand so you just play around with it till you find your bliss. anyway. chia. milk. then i add a spoonful of crunchy almond butter and some vanilla. then I add some cocoa powder. then i add cane sugar (stevia, whatever) a little at a time and taste the chia liquid in between for sweetness…the hard part is letting it gel…one thing I do is make one to eat immediately and make another to thicken. anyhow if you put it in a jar you just take it with you and shake it between bites and it gets thicker and thicker…sooo gooooodd….

My guess for your lent challenge is that you will prepare your own foods; no convenience foods.

I have never heard of the type of chia seeds stuff that you are using. My husband and I live in Vancouver Canada, we use just the plain chia seeds (they are tiny little black seeds) all on their own and we add them to lots of stuff like spinach salads, 8 grain hot cereal (also a bunch of other seeds and nuts) and buffalo meatballs, sauces etc. I don’t really find that they have a lot of flavour and the have nothing added to them, they are just straight seeds from the Organic Grocery that we shop at here. Give them a try and see if you like them. Have a good day.

Sounds interesting, and the nutritional aspect is intriguing but I don’t think I could get into these! I guess I won’t know for sure unless I try, though.

  11. I read about those things in the book Born to Run and have been wanting to give them a try.

Great plans for your 27th year! I too am turning 27 this year. I still can’t believe it! It’s like my 30’s are getting closer & closer every day :)

  13. I haven’t tried chia but i think i just may :)

    Hi Lorrie,
Thanks for reviewing my product, Chocolate Chia Goodness.

The salt problem was corrected, it was just in one batch, sorry you got one of those. (The good news is that it’s Celtic Sea Salt, the most mineral rich salt on the planet!).

We also have just plain chia, and lots of recipes how to use it on your youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/ruthsfoods.

    Be Well,
    Ruth

Hi Lorrie! I recently found your blog and have enjoyed reading through it! I’m working on losing 100 pounds this year. A big goal, but I’m off to a good start and am feeling confident with my plan. This post reminded me of the Chia Seeds I had in my cupboard. I’d forgotten about them but, thanks to you, pulled them out and have been adding them to my oatmeal, soup/chili, and protein shakes (mine aren’t flavored). I’ve added you to my blog roll and will continue to check in - visit me when you get a chance! 8) http://www.isladeangela.wordpress.com ~ Bye! Angie
